GrowingupinKorea,Iwasimmersedinaculturerichwithtraditions,fromtheancientwisdomofConfucianismthatpermeatesfamilyandsocialvaluestothevibrantmodern-dayK-popandK-dramaphenomenathathavetakentheworldbystorm.However,Iyearnedforabroaderperspective,achancetointeractwithpeoplefromdiversebackgroundsandstudyinanacademicenvironmentthatisrenownedglobally.

TheeducationalinstitutionsintheUnitedStatesarelikebeaconsofinnovationandintellectualgrowth.Theirreputationforcutting-edgeresearch,diversecurriculums,andaspiritofacademicfreedomattractedme.Irememberporingovercollegebrochuresandwebsites,imaginingmyselfwalkingthroughthesprawlingcampuses,engaginginlivelydiscussionsinseminarroomsfilledwithstudentsfromdifferentcornersoftheworld.

LeavingKoreameantsayinggoodbyetomyfamilyandfriends,tothefamiliaralleysofSeoullinedwithstreetfoodvendorsandthecomfortofmylocalneighborhood.ButthethoughtoftheadventuresthatawaitedintheUSkeptmegoing.Iknewthatthisjourneywouldnotonlyenhancemyacademicknowledgebutalsoshapemeasaperson.

AsIboardedtheplanetotheUnitedStates,amixofemotionswelledupinsideme.Therewasexcitementattheprospectofstartinganewchapterinmylife,fearoftheunknown,andatingeofsadnessatleavingbehindwhatwasfamiliar.Yet,Iwasdeterminedtomakethemostofthisopportunity,toembracethechallengesandjoysthatwouldcomewithbeinganinternationalstudentinAmerica.

OnceIarrived,thefirstfewweekswereawhirlwind.Adjustingtothenewtimezone,theAmericanwayoflife,andtheacademicsystemwasnoeasyfeat.Thelanguage,whileIhadstudiedEnglishforyears,stillpresentedsomenuancesindailyconversations.Makingnewfriendsfromdifferentculturalbackgroundswasbothrewardingandchallenging.Ifoundmyselfconstantlylearning,notjustfrommyclassesbutalsofromthepeoplearoundme.

Inmyclasses,Iwasexposedtonewteachingmethods.Professorsencouragedstudentstoaskquestions,engageindebates,andthinkcritically.Thiswasquitedifferentfromthemorerote-learningfocusedenvironmentIwasusedtoinKorea.Ittooksometimeformetofindmyvoiceintheclassroom,tobeboldenoughtosharemyideasandopinions.ButasIdid,Idiscoveredanewlevelofconfidenceinmyabilities.

Outsideoftheclassroom,IexploredtheAmericanculture.Ivisitedmuseums,attendedlocalfestivals,andtrieddifferenttypesofAmericancuisine.Ialsojoinedstudentclubsrelatedtomyinterests,whichhelpedmetobuildanewsocialcircleandfurtherdevelopmyskillsinareasoutsideofacademics.

StudyingintheUnitedStateshasbeenajourneyofself-discovery.Ithasmadememoreindependent,moreculturallysensitive,andmoreawareofthevastnessoftheworld.IknowthatwhenIreturntoKorea,IwillcarrywithmenotonlyadegreebutalsoawealthofexperiencesandmemoriesthatwillshapemyfutureinwaysIcouldnothaveimaginedwhenIfirstsetfootonAmericansoil.
