Thefirstthingthatstruckmewasthesheersizeanddiversityofthiscountry.FromthetoweringskyscrapersofNewYorkCitytothewide-openspacesoftheMidwest,thelandscapesareasvariedasthepeoplewhoinhabitthem.Inmyuniversity,Iamsurroundedbystudentsfromallcornersoftheworld,eachbringingtheirownuniquecultures,traditions,andperspectives.Thismelting-potenvironmenthasbeenbothexhilaratingandchallenging.

Exhilarating,becauseitoffersmetheopportunitytolearnaboutdifferentwaysoflife,toengageincross-culturalconversations,andtoexpandmyworld-viewinwaysIneverthoughtpossible.Iremembermyfirstdayinahistoryclass,wherestudentsfromEurope,Asia,Africa,andtheAmericasdebatedhistoricaleventsfromtheirownculturallenses.Itwasarevelationtoseehowdifferentinterpretationscouldco-existandenrichourunderstandingofthepast.

Challenging,becauseadaptingtoaneweducationalsystemandsocialnormshasnotbeenwithoutitshurdles.TheAmericaneducationalsystememphasizescriticalthinking,activeparticipationinclass,andindependentresearch.Comingfromaneducationalbackgroundwhererotelearningwasmoreprevalent,Ifounditdifficultatfirsttovoicemyopinionsfreelyinclassortoinitiateself-directedresearchprojects.Butthroughperseveranceandthesupportofmyprofessorsandclassmates,Iamgraduallygettingthehangofit.

Socially,too,therehavebeenadjustments.Americansocialnorms,suchastheconceptofpersonalspaceandthecasualyetdirectcommunicationstyle,arequitedifferentfromwhatIamusedto.Therehavebeenmomentsofmiscommunicationandculturalmisunderstandings,butthesehavealsobeenvaluablelearningexperiences.Forexample,Ioncemisinterpretedafriendlyinvitationasamoreformalcommitment,whichledtosomeconfusion.However,aftertalkingitoutwithmyAmericanfriends,Igainedabetterunderstandingoftheirsocialcues.

LivingintheUnitedStatesalsomeansexperiencinganewsetofculturalfestivalsandtraditions.Halloween,Thanksgiving,andtheFourthofJulyarenowpartofmyannualcalendar.EachoftheseholidaysoffersaglimpseintoAmericanhistoryandvalues.Halloweenwithitsspookydecorationsandtrick-or-treatingisafun-filledcelebrationthatshowcasesAmericancreativityandloveforallthingsfestive.Thanksgivingisatimeforfamily,gratitude,andofcourse,ahugefeast.Itmakesmereflectontheimportanceofgivingthanksinmyownlife.

Inadditiontoculturalandsocialexploration,IamalsofascinatedbythenaturalbeautyoftheUnitedStates.IhavehadtheopportunitytovisitnationalparkslikeYosemiteandYellowstone.Themajesticwaterfalls,geothermalwonders,anddiversewildlifeintheseparksareafarcryfromtheurbanenvironmentofmyhomecountry.Standinginthemidstofthesenaturalmarvels,Ifeelasenseofaweandhumility.

Overall,mylifeasaninternationalstudentintheUnitedStatesisarichtapestryofexperiences,ajourneyofgrowthandself-discovery.Itisacontinuousprocessofadaptation,learning,andembracingthenew,whilealsoholdingontomyownculturalroots.
