SingaporeisacountrywhereEnglishisoneofthemainlanguagesusedindailylife,inschools,andintheworkplace.WhenIfirstarrived,IwasimmediatelythrownintoanEnglish-dominatedenvironment.Intheclassroom,professorslecturedentirelyinEnglish.Isatthere,wide-eyed,strugglingtocatcheveryword.ThevocabularytheyusedwassoadvancedandthespeedoftheirspeechwassofastthatIoftenfeltlostandconfused.Icouldonlyunderstandfragmentsofwhatwasbeingsaid,andthismadeparticipatinginclassdiscussionsalmostimpossibleforme.

Outsidetheclassroom,thingswerenoeasier.Shoppingatthelocalmalls,orderingfoodatrestaurants,orevenhavingasimpleconversationwiththelocalsallbecamearduoustasks.Iwouldstutterandfumblefortherightwords,oftenresultinginmisunderstandings.Onetime,whenIwastryingtoaskfordirectionstoafamouslandmark,Igotsotongue-tiedthatthepersonIwasaskingjustlookedatmeinbewilderment.Itwasatrulyembarrassingmoment,butitalsomademerealizejusthowmuchIneededtoimprovemyEnglish.

Butinsteadofbeingdiscouraged,Idecidedtotakethischallengehead-on.Istartedbymakingastrictstudyscheduleformyself.Everydayafterclass,IwouldspendatleastthreehoursstudyingEnglishgrammar,memorizingnewwords,andpracticingmylisteningandspeakingskills.IwatchedEnglishmoviesandTVshowswithsubtitles,tryingtopickupontheintonation,pronunciation,andcommonexpressions.IalsojoinedanEnglish-languageconversationgroupwhereIcouldinteractwithothernon-nativeEnglishspeakersandnativespeakersalike.

Inadditiontoself-study,Imadefulluseoftheresourcesavailableattheuniversity.IattendedEnglish-improvementworkshopsandsoughthelpfromthelanguagecenter.Theteacherstherewereverypatientandhelpful.TheyprovidedmewithpersonalizedstudyplansandgavemealotofusefultipsonhowtoimprovemyEnglishmoreeffectively.

Gradually,Istartedtoseesomeprogress.Iwasabletounderstandmoreinclassandevencontributetosomesimplediscussions.Myconversationswithlocalsbecamesmoother,andInolongerfeltasself-consciouswhenspeakingEnglish.AlthoughIstillhavealongwaytogotoreachahighlevelofEnglishproficiency,IamproudoftheprogressIhavemadesofar.

StudyinginSingaporewithpoorEnglishatthebeginninghasbeenatoughbutrewardingexperience.Ithastaughtmetheimportanceofperseverance,self-discipline,andthewillingnesstostepoutofmycomfortzone.IamdeterminedtocontinueworkinghardonmyEnglishsothatIcanfullyenjoymystudylifehereandachievemyacademicandcareergoals.
