Istillrememberthefirst-dayjittersasIsteppedintomynewelementaryschoolintheUnitedStates.ItwasaworldsodifferentfromwhatIwasusedtobackinmyhomecountry.

Theschoolbuildingwaslargeandcolorful,withbrightmuralsonthewallsandwide-openspaces.Theclassroomswerefilledwithvariouslearningmaterials,frominteractivewhiteboardstobinsofcolorfulbooks.

Thestudentsherewereadiversegroup.Therewerekidswithdifferentskincolors,speakingdifferentlanguages,andwearingdifferentstylesofclothes.Iwasabitintimidatedatfirst,notknowinghowtofitin.Buttheteacherswereincrediblykindandwelcoming.Myhomeroomteacher,Mrs.Johnson,hadawarmsmileandagentlevoice.SheintroducedmetotheclassandmadesureIfeltincludedfromtheverystart.

Intheacademicaspect,theteachingmethodswerequitedistinct.Insteadofjustlisteningtolecturesallday,wehadalotofhands-onactivities.Forexample,inscienceclass,wedidexperimentsalmosteveryweek.Onetime,wemadeourownvolcanoesusingbakingsodaandvinegar.Itwassomuchfuntoseethe"lava"erupt,andatthesametime,Ilearnedaboutchemicalreactionsinaveryvividway.

Thesociallifeinschoolwasalsoanewexperience.Duringrecess,everyonewouldrunouttotheplayground.Therewereswings,slides,andalargefieldwherekidsplayedsoccerortag.ImademyfirstAmericanfriend,Lily,ontheswings.Shewasveryfriendlyandhelpedmegettoknowmorestudents.Wewouldchatduringlunchtime,sharingstoriesaboutourdifferentcultures.

Ialsojoinedsomeafter-schoolclubs.IchosetheartclubbecauseIloveddrawing.Intheclub,wegottouseallkindsofartsupplies,likewatercolors,coloredpencils,andevenclay.Itwasagreatplacetoexpressmycreativityandmeetotherstudentswhohadthesameinterests.

AlthoughthereweretimeswhenImissedmyoldlife,myfamily,andmyfriendsbackhome,Iwasgraduallyadaptingtothisnewenvironment.EverydayinthisAmericanelementaryschoolwasanewadventure,achancetolearnandgrowinwaysIneverimaginedbefore.
