Myexperiencewithahostfamilyduringmystudy-abroadjourneyintheUnitedStateshasbeennothingshortofremarkable.Steppingofftheplaneintoaforeignland,filledwithamixofexcitementandtrepidation,Iwasgreetedbymyhost-family,theJohnsons.

TheJohnsonswereawarm-heartedcoupleintheirforties,withtwochildren,ahigh-schoolernamedJakeandamiddle-schoolernamedLily.FromthemomentIenteredtheircozysuburbanhome,Iwasenvelopedinasenseofwarmthandbelonging.Theirhousewasatwo-storybrickbuildingwithawell-maintainedfrontyardandasmallbackyardwheretheyhadaswingsetandabarbecuegrill.

Thefirstfewdayswereatimeofadjustment.Iwasgettingusedtothenewenvironment,theAmericanwayoflife,andtheuniquefamilydynamicsoftheJohnsons.Mrs.Johnsonwasanexcellentcook.SheintroducedmetoavarietyofAmericandishes,fromclassicapplepiestojuicyhamburgers.OneofmyfavoritemealswastheThanksgivingdinnersheprepared.Thetablewasladenwithahugeroastedturkey,stuffing,mashedpotatoes,andcranberrysauce.Itwasafeastlikenoother,andIfeltsoluckytobeapartofthisfamilycelebration.

Mr.Johnsonwasveryinterestedinmystudies.Hewouldoftenaskmeaboutmycoursesattheuniversityandofferhisowninsights,basedonhisyearsofworkexperience.Healsoencouragedmetoparticipateinlocalcommunityactivities.Withhissupport,Ijoinedalocalvolunteergroupthathelpedcleanuptheneighborhoodpark.Itwasagreatwaytomeetnewpeopleandgetinvolvedinthelocalcommunity.

JakeandLilywerelikemyyoungersiblings.Wewouldplayboardgamestogetheronweekends,andtheywouldtellmeallabouttheirschoollives,theirfriends,andtheirdreams.Jakewasreallyintobaseball,andhetookmetoafewlocalgames.Theatmosphereatthestadiumwaselectric,withfanscheeringandthesmellofhotdogsandpopcornintheair.Lily,ontheotherhand,lovedart.Sheshowedmeherpaintingsanddrawings,andweevenhadanart-makingsessioninthelivingroomoneafternoon.

LivingwiththeJohnsonsalsogavemeadeeperunderstandingofAmericanfamilyvalues.Familytimewashighlyprized.Everyevening,wewouldsitaroundthedinnertableandshareourday.Therewasasenseofopencommunicationandmutualrespectwithinthefamily.Theyalsoemphasizedtheimportanceofindependenceandself-reliance.Whiletheywerealwaystheretosupportme,theyalsoencouragedmetosolvemyownproblemsandmakemyowndecisions.

MystaywiththehostfamilyhasbeenanintegralpartofmyAmericanexperience.Ithasnotonlyprovidedmewithacomfortableplacetolivebutalsoarichculturalimmersion.IhavemadelifelongfriendsintheJohnsons,andIwillalwayscherishthememoriesofthelaughter,themeals,andtheheart-to-heartconversationswesharedinthisAmericanhome.
