WhenIfirstdecidedtostudyinMalaysia,Iwasfilledwithamixofexcitementandtrepidation.Theall-ureofanewcountry,differentcultures,andafreshacademicenvironmentwasthrilling.However,onemajorconcernloomedlargeoverme-mypoorEnglishproficiency.

ComingfromabackgroundwhereEnglishwasnottheprimarylanguageofdailycommunication,Ihadalwaysstruggledwiththelanguage.Grammarrulesseemedlikeamaze,andexpressingcomplexthoughtsinEnglishwasaHerculeantask.WhenIsteppedontothecampusinMalaysia,IwasimmediatelyconfrontedwiththerealityofanEnglish-dominantacademicandsocialsetting.
Intheclassrooms,professorslecturedinEnglishatapacethatwashardformetokeepupwith.Everywordtheysaidseemedtoflyby,andIoftenfoundmyselflostintheseaofunfamiliarvocabulary.TakingnoteswasanightmareasItriedtoquicklyjotdownkeypointswhilealsotryingtounderstandtheoverallmeaning.Groupdiscussionswereevenmorechallenging.Myclassmates,manyofwhomwerenative-Englishspeakersorhadamuchhigherlevelofproficiency,wouldeffortlesslyexchangeideas,whileIwouldsitthere,fumblingfortherightwords,afraidtospeakupandmakeafoolofmyself.
Outsidetheclassroom,socialinteractionswerealsoastruggle.MakingfriendswasdifficultbecauseIwasconstantlyself-consciousaboutmybrokenEnglish.Iwouldavoidsocialeventsattimes,choosingtostayinmydormroominsteadofputtingmyselfinsituationswhereImightembarrassmyself.Shoppingwasanotheradventure,asIhadtostruggletocommunicatewiththeshopkeepers,oftenresortingtogesturesandsimplewordstogetmymessageacross.
ButIrefusedtoletmypoorEnglishholdmeback.Imadeafirmdecisiontoimprove.IstartedbyreadingEnglish-languagebooks,newspapers,andmagazineseveryday.Atfirst,itwasslowgoing,withmeconstantlyreferringtothedictionary.Butgradually,myvocabularyexpanded,andIbecamemorefamiliarwithdifferentsentencestructures.IalsobeganwatchingEnglishmoviesandTVshowswithsubtitles,tryingtopickuponthenaturalflowofthelanguageandcommonexpressions.
IjoinedEnglish-languageconversationgroupsoncampus,forcingmyselftospeakupandinteractwithothers.Itwasnerve-wrackingatfirst,butwitheachconversation,Igainedalittlemoreconfidence.Ialsosoughthelpfrommyprofessorsandclassmates.Theyweremorethanwillingtoassist,offeringtipsongrammar,vocabulary,andpronunciation.
Astimewentby,Inoticedsmallbutsignificantimprovements.Inclass,Iwasabletofollowthelecturesbetterandevencontributetodiscussions.Imadenewfriends,andsocializingnolongerfilledmewithdread.MyEnglishwasstillfarfromperfect,butIwasnolongerthetimidandself-consciousstudentwhowasafraidtoopenhermouth.StudyinginMalaysiawithpoorEnglishwasahugechallenge,butitalsobecameanopportunityforgrowth,teachingmetheimportanceofperseveranceandthepowerofself-improvement.
