Intheclassrooms,professorsandfellowstudentscommunicatedfreelyinEnglish.Atfirst,Istruggledtokeepup.Thelectureswerefilledwithcomplexterminologiesandrapid-fireconversations.Butinsteadofbeingdaunted,Isawthisasanopportunityforgrowth.

IstartedbyimmersingmyselfinEnglish-languageenvironmentsasmuchaspossible.IjoinedEnglish-speakingclubsoncampus,whereIcouldpracticespeakingwithstudentsfromdifferentbackgrounds.Itwasabitnerve-wrackingatfirst,asIwasconstantlyworriedaboutmakinggrammarmistakesornotbeingabletoexpressmyselfclearly.Butgradually,withmorepractice,Ibecamemoreconfident.

Outsideofschool,Ialsomadeanefforttointeractwiththelocals.Whetheritwaschattingwiththefriendlystallownersinthelocalmarketsorhavingconversationswithmyneighbors,thesereal-lifeinteractionswereinvaluableinimprovingmylanguageskills.IlearnednotonlytheformalEnglishusedinacademicsettingsbutalsothecolloquialexpressionsandslangsthataddedatouchofauthenticitytomylanguageuse.

Theuniversityalsoprovidedvariouslanguage-supportservices.TherewereEnglish-tutoringsessionsavailableforinternationalstudentslikeme,whereIcouldgetone-on-onehelpwithmyassignmentsandlanguagedifficulties.Thetutorswerepatientandunderstanding,andtheyhelpedmewitheverythingfromgrammarcorrectiontoimprovingmywritingstyle.
